Frequently Asked Questions

MOTOR INSURANCE

Q:I have comprehensive cover on my car. Does this mean that I can drive other cars?
A:No. Comprehensive cover means that damage to your own car is covered by the insurance (as opposed to TP and TPFT cover where only your liability to other people and their prpoerty is covered (TP) and your car is cover only in the event of fire and theft (TPFT)). Usually DRIVING OTHER CARS option can be added to your policy; some policies even include it as a standard. However, it is important to remember that even if you have DRIVING OTHER CARS OPTION included in your comprehensive policy, while driving someone else's car you are cover only for third party liability.
Q:What is Breakdown Assistance?
A:Breakdown Assistance includes cover for roadside and driveway assistance with up to one hour's labour free in the event of a mechanical breakdown, malicious damage, punctures, lost or stolen keys, keys broken or locked in car, etc. It also covers towing your car to the nearest competent repairer or your own garage (whichever is closer), completion of journey if more than 30 km from your home and other replacement and accommodation benefits which are subject to certain conditions.

Q:What is CC of Car?
A:The CC of your car is the cubic capacity of the engine in your car. The engine is measured in cubic centimetres and this information will always be stated in your Vehicle Licensing Certificate/logbook

Q:What is Class of Use?
A:There are generally five types of Class of Use in car insurance. These are as follows:
Class 1A, Class 1B, Class 1C, Class 2 and Class 3

Class 1A use is for Social, Domestic and Pleasure purposes only.
Class 1B use is for Social, Domestic and Pleasure purposes with restricted business use. This must be specifically requested.
Class 1C use is for Social, Domestic and Pleasure purposes with restricted business use for publicans, guesthouse owners etc.

Class 2 use is for Social, Domestic and Pleasure purposes with some business use. This includes carriage of goods and samples. Goods and samples are not covered under the policy. However, use of the car while carrying goods and samples is covered.

Class 3 use is for Social, Domestic, Pleasure purposes and for Business/Professional purposes including Commercial Travelling or Soliciting Orders but excluding Racing, Pace-Making, Speed-Testing and the Carriage of Passengers for hire or reward.

Q:What does D.O.C. mean (Driving Other Cars)?

You have the option to increase the excess to €600, which will reduce your Premium or you may decrease the excess to €125, which will incur a slight additional Premium.

Q:What does Gap in Cover mean?
